Alexis Sanchez will be out for up to 3 weeks following the injury he picked up against Norwich in the Premier League. The Chilean player will be in the stands for the Champions League match against Olympiacos, adding a spanner in the works of the North London sides hopes for qualification. It just got harder.
Arsene Wenger came in for a lot of flak for his decision to play Sanchez against Norwhich. The severity of the injury comes as a blow to the club.
The Gunners need to beat the Greeks by 2 clear goals to progress through to the knockout rounds of the competition. Alexis will be joining Santi Cazorla who was also injured playing against the Canaries. The one silver lining is that Laurent Koscielny could be fit for the game. These injuries follow those suffered by Jack Wilshere, Danny Welbeck and Francis Coquelin. Not good news.
‘……. it is a big blow.’ said Wenger. Yup. Arsenal are now in fourth place in the UK.
The Arsenal youngsters need to step up to the plate and prove their worth, but it is a big stage on which to do it on. Arsenal have a lot of young players who are pushing for selection- they just need to go out onto the pitch with the right mind-set.
Arsenal’s ambitions have been thrown a curve ball year after year with these kinds of injuries and people are starting to point the finger at the French coach.
Wenger had been warned about the physical state of Sanchez but the medical advice fell on deaf ears.
And Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud are also in danger due to the increased pressure on them to play week in, week out.
It is a vicious circle for Wenger.
