Barcelona looks to have the best shot of winning the Champions League after last night’s defeat of Paris St Germain at Camp Nou.
Barcelona won the Champions League 3 times over six years from 2006 through 2011, but the “Blaugranas” haven’t won it since. For them, that’s like being in the desert for 3 years. Could this year be the year?
New manager Luis Enrique almost lost his job in January (his boss, director of football Andoni Zubizarreta did get the boot). But fast forward to now, and the Catalan side are well positionied to take the cup in Europe’s elite competition. After beating Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 in Paris last week, they notched up another 2 goals (both from Nehmar) to take the tally to 5-1 on aggregate. A drubbing by anyone’s measure.
And that was even with PSG’s star man Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the pitch, remember.
And let’s look at the competition. Bayern Munich pulled off a remarkable turnaround, beating Porto 6-1 and 7-4 on aggregate- so they look to be the main threat.
Real Madrid need to get one over their derfby rivals Atletico Madrid after the first leg at Atletico’s Vicente Calderon ended in a 0-0 draw. Real looked the more likely to win that game, but it was still a draw. Let’s see what happens at the Santiago Bernabeu tonight. Then there’s Juventus or Monaco – neither of which should present problems for Barça.
So it’s looking like the mouth watering prospect of Bayern vs Barcelona. The German side thumped the Catalans 7-0 on aggregate in the semifinals two years ago and eventually won the cup. Is it time for revenge? The dish is definitely cold. It’s an exciting prospect.
So who is going to win the 2014/2015 Champion’s League? Our heart says Barcelona. Our head says Barcelona. Let’s just see if they can keep up their “conveyor belt” football style against Pep- the man who invented it.
